The Tree Family

“What destroys us is not the differences in gender, color, religion or affiliation, but the inability to communicate and the many barriers of silence that must be broken.”
In this project we (Ward Zaraa and @Sara khayat ) highlighted, reflected on and discussed norms. Together with the participants during three weeks, we addressed questions regarding freedom of speech and the potential of breaking norms through art.
In the Tree Family project, we created an alternative society for humans using trees, by making clothes for them. We made three trees dressed in three garments/dresses out of three workshops. We involved different age groups, people from different cultural and geographical backgrounds, queer, and people who were newcomers.

We as artists have learned a lot from these workshops. We learned that sharing our personal experiences out loud with others makes us more sympathetic, and helps us to understand ourselves and others more easily.
We and the participants discovered that however our ethnic, geographical and cultural backgrounds are different, we are the same.
